may 4 Standin' in the Rain

A very lovely day.  Just took it easy, walked around, didn't have any plans.   I think this is important to do when visiting a place, just to savor it and not be doing things every second.  We may miss some things, but no regrets, we can return.
We walked around this morning, did some shopping.  Later, went to dinner at Marmolada and enjoyed the best meal we have had so far in Krakow.   Dan had herring as a starter, the best herring he has ever had, he says.   I had potato pancakes, one of their specialties, with mushroom sauce.  It was wonderful.  Our main courses were veal leg for Dan and I had a chicken with a cream sauce, filled with spinach.  The sauces and spices are very excellent--fresh herbs, good, good sauces. This is a fine restaurant and the cost for the whole meal with a bottle of wine, and a carafe of water was $60. This was the most expensive meal we have had so far.
Later, went to a Baroque concert at the Church of St. Paul and St. Peter.  As we sat there listening to the chamber music, it echoed in the huge apse with high ceilings.  The group was not the best, (the violin player from the Klesmer group last night was much better).  To listen to this music while looking around this church gives you such a sense of history.   This is so alive in Krakow in the old city.  It was not bombed during WWII, and has survived for centuries.  Thinking about when this church was built,in the 1600's, and how beautiful and alive it still is, is amazing, especially for us Americans who have so little of that. We walked home through the Plana, which is a beautiful park that replaced the city wall in the 1800's.

I have found that so true of Krakow----even visiting Auschwitz makes the history,   come to life and to a different kind of awareness.
